Protective Deck And Fence Staining Services In Napa & Surrounding Areas

Outdoor wood is exposed to the weather all year. Sun, rain, and foot traffic can gray, split, and wear it down over time. The right stain protects it and brings back its look, but only when the wood underneath is prepped correctly.

Napco Painting and Fine Finish Shop treats deck and fence work as a prep-first job, using penetrating stains built for Napa Valley and Sonoma weather. We have protected outdoor wood across the valley since 1997.

Professional Deck & Fence Stainers

The Stain Only Lasts as Long as the Prep

Here is the truth about staining wood. The stain performs only as well as the surface underneath it. A stain applied over dirty, weathered, or failing wood will not soak in evenly, and it will not last. That is why we start with the wood itself.

We assess the species, the current condition, and the exposure, then clean and prep the surface so the stain can penetrate. Product and prep work together to separate a deck that looks right for years from one that fades within a season.

Deck Staining

Decks take sun and foot traffic, so they need a finish that holds up underfoot. We use Sansin penetrating stains that soak into the wood instead of sitting on top as a film that can peel.

We prep the surface, apply a sample for your approval, then spray and back-brush for even coverage. Two coats are standard.

Fence Staining

Fences are long runs that need consistent color and protection against weather. We spray for efficient, even coverage across the run, then back-brush to work the stain into the grain and avoid lap marks.

Posts, rails, and hand-detail areas get extra attention so coverage stays consistent everywhere.

Our Deck & Fence Staining Process

We start by evaluating the wood species, condition, and exposure to choose the right stain system. Before full production, we apply a sample panel so you can approve the color and sheen.

Then we prepare the surface by scuff-sanding, cleaning, and addressing mildew, failing coatings, and rough grain so the stain penetrates evenly. We cover adjacent landscaping, hardscape, and structures before we begin.

During application, we spray for even coverage, then back-brush into the grain, applying two coats as standard. Posts, rails, and hand-detail areas get extra attention where spray alone will not reach evenly. We close with a final walkthrough to confirm coverage, color, and finish with you.

Deck & Fence Staining FAQs

For decks, penetrating stain is usually the better choice. Paint sits on top of the wood as a film, and on a walking surface that film tends to chip and peel.

A penetrating stain soaks into the wood, so it weathers without peeling and is easier to refresh later. Our system is built around Sansin penetrating stains for that reason.

It depends on exposure. A deck in full sun or with heavy foot traffic needs attention sooner than a shaded fence. Penetrating stains make re-coating easier, since there is no peeling film to strip first.

During your walkthrough, we give you an honest read on timing.

Yes, and we recommend it. We apply a sample or mock-up panel on your actual wood so you can approve the color and sheen before full production.

Stain looks different on different wood and in different light, so a small chip is not a reliable preview.

The two steps do different jobs. Spraying lays down even coverage quickly, and back-brushing works the stain into the grain. Back-brushing prevents lap marks and pooling and helps the stain bond to the wood.

Often, yes. Gray, weathered wood usually needs cleaning and prep to open the surface back up so new stain can penetrate.

We assess whether the wood is sound enough to stain or whether some boards need repair or replacement first.
